What are European stakes for Scottish clubs this time?

Celtic were the last Scottish team standing in Europe this season, losing to Stuttgart in in the knockout round play-off for the Europa League in February

Scotland cling on to five places in Europe for one more season before it starts to get really tricky in 2027-28.

However, there are a few knock-on effects from a declining coefficient hoving into view this summer.

Heart of Midlothian, Rangers and Celtic are involved in an almighty scrap at the top, while Motherwell are just in front of Hibernian in the race for the last guaranteed European spot from Scottish Premiership placings.

So what lies in store once the dust has settled?

Same again for the champions - or is it?

The team finishing top of the pile is again scheduled to enter the Champions League play-off needing to win that two-legged tie to reach the 36-team league phase.

Current leaders Hearts would be unseeded due to their low club coefficient, but Rangers or Celtic would have a good chance of being seeded if they win the title, although that will depend on the other teams involved.

Then there is a scenario whereby a triumphant Rangers avoid the play-off due to something Uefa calls "title-holder rebalancing".

If this year's Champions League winners have also qualified for the league phase via their domestic league, "the club with the best individual coefficient of all the domestic champions involved in qualifying will enter the league phase directly instead of the original round they had qualified for".

Liverpool, currently fifth in the Premier League, could mess that up, but they face a difficult quarter-final second leg at home to holders Paris St-Germain, having lost 2-0 in France on Wednesday.

Olympiakos are in front of Rangers in the queue of hopefuls but trail by five points in the Greek Super League.

Reaching the league phase means eight games among the continent's elite, while losing the play-off carries the safety net of dropping into the Europa League's league phase.

Celtic were stunned by Kazakh side Kairat Almaty, losing the play-off on penalties after two dreadful goalless draws. They finished 21st in the Europa League before being beaten in a knockout round play-off by Stuttgart.

Nothing changes for runners-up

The team finishing second in the Premiership enter the Champions League's second qualifying round.

Win that and a third round awaits before the play-off for the league phase.

Losing in the second qualifying round results in a Europa League third qualifying round spot.

Losing in the third qualifying round has the consolation of a Europa League play-off.

Rangers beat Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen before a play-off thrashing from Club Brugge. The Ibrox side picked up just four points in the Europa League, finishing 32nd.

Less shine on Scottish Cup reward

In recent years, the prize for lifting the Scottish Cup was a Europa League play-off, with a guaranteed parachute into the Conference League's league stage.

That is gone as our ranking slides.

Now it is a place in Europa League third qualifying round, with a drop into the Conference League play-off in the event of defeat.

Should semi-finalists Celtic win the cup this season and finish in the top two, then the competition's European standing is transferred to the team finishing third.

Cup winners Aberdeen lost out to Romanian side FCSB 5-2 on aggregate and entered the Conference League, where they failed to win a game and ended up second bottom of the 36-team table.

Early start for last two entrants

It is getting harder here too, with two places in the Conference League's second qualifying round now allocated to third and fourth spot.

Last term, third got you into the same stage of the Europa League.

So that leaves the prospect of three two-legged ties to reach the league phase of the third-tier tournament.

In the event of Celtic winning the cup, the team finishing fifth in the Premiership nudges in.

If St Mirren, Falkirk or Dunfermline Athletic do the business at Hampden, then that fifth-placed side can start planning for Scottish League Cup football instead.

What happened last time?

Hibs lost out to Midtjylland in Europa League qualifying, beat Partizan Belgrade in the Conference League, then suffered a play-off defeat by Legia Warsaw.

Dundee United got past UNA Strassen of Luxembourg before losing to Rapid Vienna in the third round of Conference League qualifying.
